Keeping your Computer Healthy

  • Posted on August 11, 2009 at 11:38 pm

Keeping a computer healthy is possible. Computers should be kept and used in a room with just the right temperature and where air can freely circulate. They should be also kept clean. However these are not enough. Computers should also undergo periodic diagnostic test.

There are generally three ways to do this:

1. checking the hard disk for errors;
2. running the disk clean up program; and
3. defragging the hard disk.

Checking the hard disk for errors allow the operating system to automatically fix system errors. It also scans for and attempts to recover bad sectors. Bad sectors are segments of disk storage that can’t be read or written to because of a physical problem in the disk.

Another way keeping your computer healthy is using the operating system’s disk clean up facility. This allows you to free more disk space by removing optional programs that you do not use. It also frees the recycle bin of files that you have deleted.

Lastly, a typical computer user often saves and erases files on the hard disks. As this is done over time, fragmentation happens. It occurs when the operating system can not or will not allocate enough adjoining space to store a complete file, and instead puts parts of it in gaps between other files.

De fragmentation (or def ragging) physically the contents of the disk in order to store the pieces of each file close together and in order. It also attempts to create large regions of free space to prevent the return of fragmentation. Defragmentation helps to restore a drive to its original speed.

Now as a user of our personal computer it is our responsibility to maintain the health of our personal computers. Being the user of this we are not the beneficiaries we are also the responsible for the maintenance of our computers.

What Computer can Do to Us?

There are things that people are now able to do in our everyday living because of computers. Computers improve our way of life.

In homes, there are machines that are also a computer operated which is sometimes called microprocessors. They are placed in the electronics designs of computerized appliances like alarm clocks, washing machines, microwave ovens and electric stove. Some of them operate home security systems, control temperature, and turn the television On and Off.

In schools, computers are used for computer aided instructions (CAI). Teachers can use computer programs that teach a particular lesson. Teachers may also add graphic,sound and animation, or live pictures to their lectures. Computers are often used to keep track of school records.

In selling business, computers check credit status of customers. Computers can also transfer money electronically with the help f telephone lines. Department stores and supermarkets keep tracks of their sales and goods with the use of the bar codes and scanners.
